The agent of Manchester United left-back Alexander Buttner has launched a scathing attack on the club after the deadline day drama over Fabio Coentrao’s failed move from Real Madrid, the Daily Express reports.

United had been linked with a new left-back for much of the summer, with Everton’s Leighton Baines being the main priority for new United boss David Moyes, who worked with the England international at his old club.

While Moyes succeeded in raiding the Toffees for midfielder Marouane Fellaini, he could not prise Baines away from Goodison Park, and moved instead for Real Madrid’s Coentrao late on transfer deadline day.

A loan move looked to have been agreed for the Portuguese international, also a summer target for Tottenham, to move to Old Trafford, only for the necessary paperwork not to have been submitted on time. This allegedly left the 25-year-old in tears, as he had his heart set on a move to the Premier League champions.

Buttner’s agent Alexander Bursac slammed the club for their work in the transfer market, and expressed his annoyance that their failure to bring in Coentrao meant that his client could not seal his own move away before the passing of the transfer window deadline.

Bursac is quoted as saying: “It’s unbelievable that Coentrao was not signed on time and, whether that is an error on the part of Real or United doesn’t matter.

“We have received assurances of a loan. Alex is not necessarily looking for a guarantee of playing time, but he does not want to spend the entire season on the bench.”

Buttner only signed for United last year, but has so far failed to displace Patrice Evra as the club’s first choice left-back.
