Young Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has been the subject of an enquiry from Barcelona as they eye a replacement for Victor Valdes, according to the Daily Express.

The 21-year-old Belgian is a highly rated prospect, having spent the last three seasons on loan in La Liga with Atletico Madrid, and impressing with his displays for the Spanish outfit.

However, he faces stiff competition for a starting spot at Stamford Bridge due to the presence of Petr Cech, who has been the club’s number one to great success since 2004, and who doesn’t look like being displaced any time soon.

Barcelona, on the other hand, are in desperate need of a new ‘keeper, with Valdes set to leave the club at the expiry of his contract next summer, as he seeks a new challenge having spent his whole career at the Nou Camp.

The Catalans were linked with the likes of Pepe Reina and Iker Casillas at points this summer, though they failed to bring in a replacement before the passing of the transfer window deadline.

Courtois could now be their main target next year, as they may fancy their chances that the youngster will still not be in the plans of Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho by then.
