Former Liverpool midfield player Steve McMahon says that controversial front-man Luis Suarez still wants to leave Anfield, according to reports on talkSPORT.

The mercurial Uruguay international’s future on Merseyside has been in grave doubt all summer long after the 26-year-old made public his desire to leave the Reds at the end of the previous campaign.

Suarez claimed while away on international duty with his country at the FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil back in June that he was being forced out of Liverpool due to the over-the-top press intrusion into his life back home in England.

However, the striker then altered his story when an expected bid for his services from Spanish giants Real Madrid never materialised, saying that he in fact wanted to join a club that was competing in this season’s UEFA Champions League, with now Premier League rivals Arsenal his preferred destination.

But when his move to the Emirates fell through after Liverpool rejected two offers from the north London club for their star man, Suarez apologised to his team-mates and manager Brendan Rodgers for his conduct during the summer, stating that he now intended to stay at Anfield after all.

McMahon, though, thinks that the attacker will still try and push through his exit from the Reds, saying:  “You don’t know whether you can trust him. If he had the opportunity to jump ship, do you think he’d do it? The obvious answer is yes.

“He’s just biding his time. He wants to get another good season under his belt and then he’ll see what opportunities there are to leave Liverpool [next summer].”
