City to bring in veteran Frenchman.Manchester City are set to offer former Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur defender William Gallas a short term deal as cover for injured new boy Martin Demichelis.

CaughtOffside understands that the 36-year-old has broken off talks with Crystal Palace in order to hear what the title contenders are proposing and will meet with new boss Manuel Pellegrini this weekend over the international break.

Gallas has been linked with a number of clubs since being released by Spurs at the end of last season including Palace, Hull City and Australian side Melbourne Heart. He is thought to favour a move to a fellow top flight and was willing to lower his wages for Ian Holloway’s men to stay in London.

However, news of City’s tentative interest could make him change his mind in order to complete a short term move up to Manchester, and he would be free to link up with them straight away as he is a free agent.

Should he sign, he would solely be providing cover for the injured Martin Demichelis. The Argentine completed his £3.5m move from Atletico Madrid on transfer deadline day, where he had been for just two months without kicking a ball. However, he now faces six weeks out on the sidelines after damaging knee ligaments on City’s training ground, leaving the club short on cover in defence as Vincent Kompany still won’t be ready to return until the end of September.

Gallas, who has played for Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham during his time in England, still feels he has something to offer a top flight side and sees a move to City as one last hurrah before he heads off into the sunset of his career before heading to Australia of the United States.

He still managed to make 17 appearances for Spurs last season and has been keeping himself fit over the summer in case on offer such as this came along.
