Portugal will be hoping to put some distance between themselves and the rest of the group at the top of the table on Friday by overcoming the Ulstermen.

The home side currently sit in fourth place in the table, and with four games to go they lie six points behind second placed Russia, meaning that qualification is still very much on the cards.

Northern Ireland will go into this match full of confidence after disposing of Russia last time out, while they also took a point from Portugal in the reverse fixture last October.

Blackpool defender Craig Cathcart will miss out, but coach Michael O’Neil has drafted Josh Magennis and Kilmarnock defender Rory McKeown into his squad.

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans could be in contention for a starting spot despite missing out of the opening of the season for his club, though Fulham’s Aaron Hughes remains a doubt.

Portugal have no fresh injury concerns and will be expected to be led by Cristiano Ronaldo and new Valencia striker Helder Postiga after he has enjoyed a productive start to his own personal campaign.
