Mourinho watching targets early this year.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is believed to be in Serbia this weekend to take a closer look at young Benfica striker Lazar Markovic as he takes part in his country’s World Cup qualifier against neighbours and rivals Croatia on Friday night, the Daily Star reports.
Portuguese newspaper A Bola claims that ‘The Special One’ will be in attendance at Red Star Stadium in Belgrade to watch the Group A clash under the guise of watching Branislav Ivanovic’s performance as well as keeping an eye on the young Benfica forward.
The Stamford Bridge outfit were reportedly close to agreeing a deal for the 19-year-old last year, but unforeseen complications meant that the move had to be shelved as it couldn’t be completed before the transfer window closed.
The Serbian winger only completed an £8.8m move from Partizan Belgrade to Benfica earlier this summer, and is currently on red hot form for his new club, finding the back of the net in each of his first two league appearances.
Mourinho is thought to be keen to be more aggressive in the transfer market this time around, and even though Markovic only joined his new club recently the former Porto boss will have no qualms about raiding his old rivals.
