Manchester United are hoping to persuade Wayne Rooney to sign a new long-term contract to see him remain at Old Trafford for the rest of his career, according to the Telegraph.

Rooney had reportedly handed in a transfer request at the club back in May, leading to a summer of intense speculation surrounding his future as the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal showed a strong interest in luring him away from United.

Chelsea in particular were keen to sign him, and manager Jose Mourinho urged the England international to submit a transfer request again at the club, only for Rooney to decline to do so.

This appeared to signal the 27-year-old’s desire to stay with United, where he has spent almost his entire career, and the Red Devils will now be hoping he commits to a new contract beyond his current deal which expires in 2015.

It is thought that Chelsea could come back in for Rooney again in January, and other clubs may continue to circulate as Rooney’s current deal heads closer to expiry, leaving United in a weaker position to negotiate a higher asking price, or potentially even lose him for free at the end of next season.
