Barcelona president Sandro Rosell has handed a potential transfer boost to both Arsenal and Manchester City, as he has ruled his club out of the running to sign Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas, according to the Daily Express.

The 32-year-old has had a frustrating few months at the Bernabeu, having found himself dropped to the bench after a dispute with previous manager Jose Mourinho, and continuing to be out of the team under new boss Carlo Ancelotti.

With this blow coming in the season before next summer’s World Cup, where Casillas will be hoping to both start for and captain the Spanish national team as they look to defend their title, it is thought that he may consider a move away from the club where he has spent his entire career.

This has seen Arsenal and Manchester City show an interest in the legendary shot-stopper, though he did not secure a move before the passing of the summer transfer deadline.

Barcelona were also said to be surprise candidates to sign him, as they look to replace Victor Valdes, who will be leaving the club next season when his contract at the Nou Camp expires.

However, Rosell laughed off the rumours of signing an ‘icon’ from their fierce rivals, comparing it with Real Madrid signing midfielder Xavi from Barca.

He said: “Casillas is the icon of Madrid. Seeing him play for Barcelona would be like Real Madrid buying Xavi.”
