Manchester United manager David Moyes is keeping an eye on Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke, and may move for him within the next year depending on how Wayne Rooney’s future resolves itself.

United are still waiting on Rooney to commit his future to the club, with a new five-year contract on the table to the England international, though Benteke is being kept in mind as a backup plan, according to the Daily Mirror.

The powerful Belgian enjoyed a fantastic first season in the Premier League last year, almost single-handedly keeping Aston Villa in the Premier League with his fine form in front of goal, which saw him find the back of the net 16 times for Paul Lambert’s side.

His all-action displays upfront saw him become a target for several top clubs over the summer, with the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and Borussia Dortmund all thought to be keen on him, though he was persuaded to stay at Villa by signing a new bumper contract with the club.

Moyes feels the 22-year-old’s physical style of play could make him a good replacement for Rooney, though he is not expecting to rush into the market for a striker at the moment as he still hopes of keeping his unsettled star.

Rooney had been linked with Chelsea for much of the summer transfer window, before appearing to reject their advances late on.
