Newcastle look set to offer a new contract to French winger Hatem Ben Arfa in order to fight off interest from Premier League rivals Liverpool, according to the Metro.

The talented attacker has been a key player for the Magpies for the last couple of seasons, and his fine form has also been him attract interest from Ligue 1 giants PSG in recent months as his future at St James’ Park remained uncertain.

However, Newcastle will now be hoping to keep him at the club for the long term by offering to double his wages from £40,000 a week to £80,000 a week.

Liverpool will still be hoping to be in with a chance of signing him in January, as they have been on the market for a winger for some time, bringing in Victor Moses on loan from Chelsea for the season, but missing out on the likes of Willian and Christian Atsu, both of whom joined Chelsea.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is somewhat short on the flanks having sold Stewart Downing to West Ham and sent Oussama Assaidi out on loan to Stoke for the duration of the 2013/14 campaign.
