Former Schalke 04 front man Ciprian Marica is on the verge of joining Premier League giants Arsenal on a free transfer, according to reports in the Daily Mirror.

The experienced Romanian international was released by the Bundesliga outfit earlier this summer after spending the last two seasons with the German side, during which the time the 27-year-old managed to find the back of the net on just nine occasions in total in his 52 appearances for the club, including only five strikes in his 34 league outings.

Marica also played for the likes of both Shakhtar Dontesk and VfB Stuttagrt before his stint in Gelsenkirchen, netting 30 times in 133 matches at the latter and 22 times in 113 games with the former.

However, having been released by Schalke, the striker is now on the look-out for a new club this season and with Arsenal head coach Arsene Wenger also known to be in desperate need of a new forward to bring to the Emirates, the Romanian could just be the answer to the north London club’s prayers in attack at the Emirates.

Wenger recently missed out on signing both Liverpool’s Luis Suarez and Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain this summer, but Marica’s agent,  Ioan Becali, has now confirmed that:  “Marica is a really great striker who has already got experience in western European football and so it’s natural that big clubs are eyeing his career. He’s close to joining Arsenal , but we have to wait for the next week.”
