A list of players the Gunners were linked to throughout the transfer window.
Over the summer months the Gunners were linked with literally a whole new team. The start of the transfer window saw Arsene Wenger boasting of a £70m war chest and a pocket full of ambitions of who he thought would be likely to join the join the club to help push them back up to the top of the table to compete for honours once again.
However, things don’t always work out the way that we plan and occasionally our targets are missed, but hey, we’re all human, right?
Goalkeeper: Julio Cesar – QPR
The Brazilian international was linked with a move to the Emirates all summer, but he has now stayed at the the Championship side and hopes to win a spot in the national team for next summer’s World Cup.
Right Back: Sebastien Corchia – Sochaux
Some things just don’t work out when they’re supposed to. Corchia had been linked with a move to the Emirates, but then his agent said Lyon were interested. Neither move happened and he’s still at Sochaux.
Left Back: Luke Shaw – Southampton
Interested like everyone else in the Premier League, the Gunners had made eyes for the 17-year-old, but Southampton managed to fend off all competition for the player.
Centre Back: Ashley Williams – Swansea City
The Welsh skipper had impressed enough last season to be the subject of a tug-of-war between Arsenal and Liverpool. Neither side won, and the 28-year-old remains in south Wales.
Centre Back: Mattias Ginter – Freiburg
The talented teenager seemed to be all set to head for the Premier League, but Freiburg stood their ground and managed to keep hold of him.
Centre Midfield: Etienne Capoue – Toulouse
The Gunners had seemingly won the race for Capoue at one stage, beating Premier League new boys Cardiff to his signature. However, in a cruel little twist of fate…he joined Spurs instead.
Centre Midfield: Geoffrey Kondogbia – Sevilla
The France international’s name was on everyone’s lips this summer as he looked set to move on. Nobody could prize him away, but he now looks set to buy out his contract in Spain and head for Monaco.
The young Brazilian was at the centre of a struggle between the north London rivals and could quite have easily joined either of them. He didn’t, though, he joined Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk instead.
A move to London seemed to be a foregone conclusion for the Montenegrin hit man. However, Arsenal dragged their feet and allowed City to steal in. Watch him score against them now.
Striker: Luis Suarez – Liverpool
Will he, won’t he? No – he didn’t. A cheeky bid of £40m + £1 allowed the Gunners to activate a non existent clause and the whole affair became rather tedious. Better luck next year.
Striker: Gonzalo Higuain – Real Madrid
Arsenal shot themselves in the foot here by going after Suarez when they should have been concentrating on trying to lure the Argentine international to the club instead.
