Former Liverpool legend Ian Rush has said that he hopes controversial star Luis Suarez will be happy with a spot on the bench once he returns from suspension as it means Liverpool will be winning the old player power debate, talkSPORT reports.

The 27-year-old still has two games remaining of his ten match ban for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovich towards the end of last season, and after much hysteria the club have managed just fine without him as they find themselves sitting pretty at the top of the table, unbeaten in their first three games.

And Rush, who led the line for the Reds between 1980-87, and again between 1988-96, hopes to see Suarez struggle to get back in the team and get used to life on the bench.

“For me, in an ideal world, after six games [of the season] when Suarez is back, I’d love to see him left out because that would mean the team is winning and he has to fight for his place,” the Welshman said.

“There’s no doubt Suarez will get back in, but what a sight that would be for the opposition if Liverpool are not playing well and they see Suarez coming on. We’re looking forward to that.”
