Swansea City’s Spanish striker Michu has hailed the signing of Jonjo Shelvey this summer, tipping the young midfielder to be an important player for the side, according to the Daily Express.

Shelvey arrived from Liverpool this summer for a fee of around £5m, and has had a good start to life at the Liberty Stadium, showing some of the potential that initially persuaded Liverpool to sign him from Charlton when he was a teenager.

Michu himself turned out to be a great signing for the Welsh club when he joined as a relative unknown from Rayo Vallecano for just £2m last summer, going on to finish as the club’s top scorer last term with 22 goals in all competitions.

Now, with the Swans set to meet Liverpool at the Liberty Stadium this weekend, much has been made of Shelvey lining up against his former side, and his team-mate Michu is backing the England international to show his quality.

“I am really happy with Jonjo,” he said. “I think he is going to have a good season because he’s a top player, and he will be important for us.

“He knows that playing against Liverpool is always difficult, but we are going to try and get the points at home. We need it.”

Michu also had some kind words for one of Liverpool’s new signings Iago Aspas, whom he knows well from their time together in La Liga with Celta Vigo. Aspas has yet to get on the score sheet for the Reds, but Michu believes he can be a success in the Premier League.

“They have one of my friends, Iago Aspas,” he added.

“I think he’s really good and is going to have a good season. I want to play against him.”
