The Toffees will be without loanee striker Romelu Lukaku who is ineligible to face his parent club, meaning Roberto MArtinez may be forced to use the unfancied Croatian hitman Nikica Jelavic.

However, the Spaniard is likely to hand debuts to his former charge at Wigan James McCarthy and on loan Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry.

McCarthy sustained a slight knock whilst on international duty for the Republic of Ireland, as did full back Seamus Coleman, but both could recover in time to play.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has confirmed that deadline day acquisition Samuel Eto’o will be in the squad to travel to Merseyside, though he is not guaranteed to start.

Mourinho has no fresh injury concerns to contend with as all of his international stars came back with a clean bill of health.

Chelsea were the only team to beat Everton at Goodison Park in last season’s Premier League, But they have won just one of their last five Premier League games at Everton (W1, D1, L3).

Fernando Torres ended a five-month Premier League goal drought when the teams last met in May – it remains his only Premier League goal of 2013
