Arsenal are keen to keep up their big spending when the transfer window re-opens in January, as they eye the addition of £30m Wayne Rooney alongside recent marquee signing Mesut Ozil, according to the Daily Mail.

Rooney had been strongly linked with a move to Chelsea for much of the summer after his future at Old Trafford came into some doubt, though he appeared to reject the opportunity to leave late on, staying a Manchester United player for now.

Still, Arsenal were also linked as admirers of his during the summer, and Arsene Wenger plans to make the most of the new spending power he can now enjoy at the Emirates Stadium by making the United front-man his next big-name addition.

The Gunners feel their addition of Ozil from Real Madrid could convince Rooney that the club are title challengers this season and are a club on the up, despite their long run of eight years without winning a trophy.

Arsenal could make an opening offer of £30m, though it is not clear if that will be enough to persuade United to sell such a key player to a rival, as they were highly reluctant to accept Chelsea’s advances for him throughout the summer.
