Spanish champions FC Barcelona have suffered a huge blow with the news that key defender Jordi Alba will be out of action for at least the next three weeks after suffering a hamstring injury playing against Sevilla in La Liga on Saturday night, according to reports in the Mail on Sunday.

The highly-rated Spanish international sustained the problem during the Catalan giants’ dramatic 3-2 victory at Camp Nou that maintains new head coach Gerardo Martino’s 1oo per cent start to the season.

However, Barca were still indebted to an injury-time strike from Chilean international Alexis Sanchez for the three points after the home side had thrown away a seemingly unassailable two-goal lead in Catalonia following goals either side of the break from Dani Alves and current Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi, only for the visitors to then stun their opponents with two quick goals of their own late on.

But the victory, which keeps Barcelona at the top of the Liga standings, has come at a cost with the Spaniards announcing on their official website after the match that attacking left-back Alba had “torn fibres in his right hamstring”.

As a result, the 24-year-old is now set to miss the club’s upcoming Champions League group-stage fixtures against Ajax and Celtic.
