Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos admits he and his team-mates are surprised by how good new signing Gareth Bale is, according to the Daily Mail.

The £85m signing ended a summer-long transfer saga by signing from Tottenham on the 1st of September, becoming the most expensive player in the history of the game, and he has already impressed with a goal on his debut and some dazzling displays in training.

Ramos, who has been at the Bernabeu since 2005, admits he and some of the other players at the club didn’t know a great deal about the Welshman before he joined this summer, as they hadn’t watched him playing for Spurs, who have not managed to qualify for the Champions League in recent seasons.

In their one season in Europe’s top club competition in 2010/11, Bale really caught the eye with some superb displays against Inter Milan, though he hasn’t had a chance to shine on the biggest stage since then, meaning he wasn’t always on the radar of non-regular viewers of English football.

However, Bale has made quite an impression now, and Ramos admits it is ‘frightening’ how good the winger will be when he reaches full fitness.

“Of course Gareth Bale has been the biggest transfer of the summer – and we are glad now that he is with us,” the Spaniard said.

“The truth is because he did not play for a team in England that played in the Champions League – we did not know that much about him.

“We know if he the coach wanted him that strongly he must be a good player – but nobody was prepared for how special he is.

“It has only been a few training sessions we have seen him in – but some of what we see we can’t believe. He is so fast, so tricky, and the frightening thing is that he is not even 100 per cent game fit yet.”
