Celtic manager Neil Lennon was in confident mood in his press conference leading up to tonight’s difficult-looking game against Italian giants AC Milan at the San Siro, saying he is hoping to “catch them cold” in the opening match of the Champions League season.

The Scottish Premier League champions gave a good account of themselves in this competition last season, springing a surprise 2-1 win over La Liga giants Barcelona at Celtic Park and making it through to the knockout stages of the tournament, though they were then humbled 5-0 on aggregate by Italian champions Juventus.

Still, Lennon is hopeful of another possible giant-killing as his side return to Italy tonight, saying: “We hope we can catch them cold.

“The coach hasn’t had a chance to find his team and get a run of form.”

In truth, Milan will be slightly concerned by their form going into this game, as they sit 9th in Serie A after just one win in their opening three league games, and are missing several key players through injury, including Stephan El Shaarawy, Riccardo Montolivo and new signing Kaka.

Once known for being something of a force in this competition, Milan have not won the Champions League since 2007.
