Arsenal kick off their tough-looking Champions League campaign in Group F as they travel to Arsene Wenger’s native France to face Marseille.
Three points will be vital for the Gunners in this first game as they also face the daunting prospect of competing for a top-two spot in their group with Napoli and last season’s beaten finalists Borussia Dortmund, though they will be boosted by the fitness of key duo Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud in France tonight.
Per Mertesacker is also back in action for Wenger’s side after missing the win at Sunderland at the weekend, and will be expected to skipper the side in the absence of Thomas Vermaelen and Mikel Arteta.
Marseille are currently fourth in Ligue 1, though their last home game ended in defeat as they were beaten 2-1 by big-spending Monaco, and they will be hoping to do better against Arsenal than they did two years ago, when they were beaten 1-0 by a late Aaron Ramsey strike.
Ramsey is the in-form player for Arsenal as well at the moment, having scored twice at the weekend and three times over the Gunners’ two-legged victory of Fenerbahce in the Champions League qualifying rounds.
