Liverpool are continuing to step up their interest in young Derby County midfielder Will Hughes, with the Daily Mirror claiming they have been sending scouts to watch him play.

The 18-year-old is rated extremely highly in England, and has been a stand-out performer in the Championship for some time now, becoming a regular for Nigel Clough’s side last season when he was still only 17.

A skillful and intelligent midfield playmaker, Hughes’ performances have seen him compared to legendary Barcelona pair Xavi and Andres Iniesta, and the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City have also been linked with him in the past.

However, Liverpool looked close to landing him towards the end of the summer, and may be back in for him in January with the news that they have been scouting the player’s recent displays.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers will be keen to have a long-term replacement for Steven Gerrard at Anfield, and Hughes looks like he could replicate the success of the Liverpool skipper for both club and country for many years to come.

It has previously been suggested that Derby will not be willing to let Hughes go for less than £10m, though Liverpool are hoping to get that price down for a player still lacking in experience at the top level.
