Chelsea are reportedly closing in on the signing of German teenager Julian Brandt, whom they have been scouting closely in recent weeks, according to the Daily Mail.

The 17-year-old Wolsburg winger looks a terrific prospect and the latest of many in this fine generation of young players coming through in Germany at the moment.

Chelsea already raided the Bundesliga for one of its prized talents this summer, signing German international winger Andre Schurrle from Bayer Leverkusen for around £18m, and manager Jose Mourinho is said to be keen to continue building his youthful side as he looks to establish a strong core at Stamford Bridge for the future.

Brandt has not yet made a senior appearance for Wolsburg, but his performances at youth level for club and country appear to be enough to have persuaded Chelsea to move fast to secure his signature.

Although Chelsea have often neglected to give young players a chance at the expense of big-name signings since the arrival of Roman Abramovich, new Financial Fair Play regulations brought in by UEFA mean the club have been forced to rethink their recruitment policy.

The Blues are also said to be keen on a move for Everton starlet Ross Barkley when the transfer window re-opens in January.
