Southampton striker Billy Sharp is set to join Championship side Reading on loan after the two clubs agreed a deal, Sky Sports reports.

Sharp has been linked with making a move to Reading for some time now with Royals boss Nigel Adkins a big admirer of his having working with him both at Scunthorpe and Southampton.

The 27-year-old has found himself out of favour at St Mary’s and has been told by Mauricio Pochettino that he does not feature in his plans this season.

Sharp spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest and he impressed at the City Ground, scoring 11 goals where he had hoped to make a more meaningful impact on the club’s promotion charge.

A number of Championship sides are believed to have made enquiries, but Reading have won the race for his signature.

Sharp has initially agreed a three-month loan deal and will become the second new signing at the club this week following the signature of former Fulham man Chris Baird on Friday.

During his two years at Southampton Sharp has managed to make just 18 appearances, scoring 10 goals.
