Sunderland have officially sacked manager Paolo Di Canio less than six months after being appointed Black Cats boss.

The Stadium of Light side have struggled for form this term, collecting just one point from five matches, leaving the north-east side sitting bottom of the table.

Di Canio was a controversial choice to take over at the club following the dismissal of Martin O’Neill and a number of protests followed his arrival but it appears that a lack of form has been the former Swindon Town manager’s undoing.

Kevin Ball will take over of the first team the squad ahead of Tuesday night’s Capital One Cup game against Peterborough United and an announcement is expected in due course regarding a permanent successor.
