Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has joined the race to sign highly rated Leeds United full back Sam Byram, according to the Mirror.

The Magpies are set to go up against a number of their Premier League rivals for his signature after the likes of Manchester City, Everton and West Bromwich Albion all expressed an interest in landing his signature.

Toon boss Pardew is tracking 20-year-old Byram after the right-back’s return to action following a five-month lay-off with a nagging hip problem.

The Essex born defender has racked-up 54 appearances and scored four goals since making his debut 13 months ago – and Newcastle scouts were amongst those watching him in Leeds’ 2-1 home defeat by Burnley on Saturday.

And Pardew is hoping to get a first-hand glimpse of the highly-rated youngster in Wednesday night’s Capital One Cup clash between his side and Brian McDermott’s Championship troops at St James’ Park.

Pardew is believed to be interested in deviating from from his usual habit of dipping into the French transfer market by turning his attentions towards younger home grown players.

The club have just one recognised right-back at the moment in the shape of Mathieu Debuchy after allowing Danny Simpson to leave on a free transfer over the summer to join QPR.
