Liverpool are set to join the race for in-demand Red Bull Salzburg defender Martin Hinteregger when the transfer window reopens for business for the year in January, according to reports in the Daily Star.

The highly rated Austria Under-21 international has been attracting the attentions of a whole host of big-name clubs from across the Continent since the start of the new season, including the likes of Premier League giants Arsenal, as well as Serie A champions Juventus.

However, it is understood that Reds head coach Brendan Rodgers has also now joined the long queue of interested coaches in Hinteregger, who can operate as either a centre back, or if necessary as a backup left back too.

But with the ‘Old Lady of Italian Football’ having been scouting the 21-year-old in action first hand of late, and the Gunners also known to have been impressed with Hinteregger’s displays at the back for Salzburg so far in this campaign, the Merseysiders know that landing the Austrian will not be an easy feat in the new year.

Hinteregger, who has a contract with Salzburg that runs until June 30 2018, has been with the Austrian giants for the past three years now, during which time the versatile defender has made 18 appearances for the club in all competitions so far in this campaign, scoring three goals in the process.
