Arsenal are ready to offer a new three-year contract to German centre-back Per Mertesacker after his recent fine form, according to the Daily Mirror.

The 2011 signing from Werder Bremen initially looked to struggle with the pace of the game in the Premier League, though he has now established himself as a key performer for the Gunners, particularly in their strong start to the new campaign.

Arsenal currently sit top of the Premier League table, and Mertesacker’s assured performances at the back have played a key role in the team’s new-found solidity and ability to grind out results.

The German international, 29, is one of the more experienced members of Arsene Wenger’s squad, and has just over a year remaining on his current contract at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal will be hoping to extend his stay further, with Mertesacker proving himself to be a great influence on and off the pitch, as he reportedly played a part in convincing both of his fellow countrymen Lukas Podolski and Mesut Ozil to sign for the club in recent times.

Bacary Sagna is another key part of the team’s defence whose contract is heading towards its end, and Arsenal will be hoping to tie him down to a new deal as well in the coming months.
