Old Trafford side target Benfica centre-back.

Man United boss David Moyes is ready to push on with advances to sign Benfica centre-back Ezequiel Garay as he looks to strengthen his defence according to TuttoMercato.

Moyes has seen his side suffer three defeats in their opening six Premier League matches, and in the process collecting two clean sheets, and with Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand struggling for form it appears that the Scot is keen to freshen up his back-line.

Garay was strongly linked with a move to Man United over the summer but no deal was forthcoming however this source believes the Premier League title holders will make an offer of £15m for the former Real Madrid man, an offer the Portuguese giants may consider.

Benfica were pipped to the Primeira Liga and Europa League titles last term but have started the current campaign fairly poorly and lie sixth in the table at present.

With Phil Jones appearing to be a better fit at full-back or in a defensive midfield position there is perhaps a need to bring in a new central defender and Garay may be the ideal target.

Garay has successfully re-ignited his career after failing to make the grade at the Bernabeu and may see a move to Man United as a logical next step in his career progression.
