Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas is closely monitoring the progress shown by loaned out Chelsea forward Romelu Lukaku as he plots a move to sign the Belgian international next summer.

CaughtOffside understands that the former Blues boss, who signed Lukaku during his brief Stamford Bridge reign, is ready to offer £22m for the 20 year old who is currently impressing during a season long loan spell at Everton.

Lukaku has made just ten Premier League appearances for Chelsea since joining the West London side just over two years ago, with only one of those being a start, but it’s perhaps a sign of how much faith Villas-Boas had in the youngster that it was during his six and a half month stint as Blues boss that six of those appearances occurred.

The Tottenham manager has brought in Roberto Soldado and Erik Lamela to boost his Spurs attack but has still seen goals hard to come by and Villas-Boas sees Lukaku as a player who can lead the North London club’s attack in the long term and the possibility of persuading the Chelsea man to move to White Hart Lane depends greatly on the relationship between the pair.

Jose Mourinho had hinted that Lukaku would play a significant part in his first team plans but even after impressing during pre-season he was still loaned out to Everton, this despite the fact that Chelsea do not possess any in-form striking alternatives.

Romelu Lukaku had an excellent loan spell at West Brom last season, scoring 17 Premier League goals despite starting just 20 Baggies matches, and should he feel that he is not valued at Chelsea then a move to Tottenham in the summer could be an option he’d consider, especially if Villas-Boas has secured a coveted Champions League berth.
