Man United expect long term target Leighton Baines to hand in a formal transfer request which would in turn lay the groundwork for a successful bid from the Old Trafford side for the Everton left-back according to Goal.com.

David Moyes had hoped that Baines would have issued the request to leave Goodison Park over the summer but such a move was not forthcoming but the Man United manager is hopeful that the 28 year old will set the wheels in motion for a move in the January transfer window.

Man United failed with a £15m bid for Baines and were told to fork out £20m for the former Wigan Athletic man, a bid that may now be on the cards after the Premier League title holder’s poor start to the campaign.

Baines is tied down to a Toffees deal until 2015 but is apparently not likely to sign a new deal while Man United are still sniffing around and Moyes wants to bring in the England man to replace French veteran Patrice Evra.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez has lavished praise on Baines in recent weeks stating;

“Leighton is the most important player for us now and in the future,”

“He has been an outstanding performer over the years, and now clearly he’s at the peak of his career.

“We’re going to make sure he feels that warmth from the football club and, from a contractual point of view, exactly the same.

“As in any walk of life, when you do things correctly and work extremely hard you need to be rewarded. Leighton is clearly a vital part of our future and is going to find out about it.”
