Sunderland appear to be on the verge of appointing Gus Poyet as their next head coach, according to reports in the Metro.

The Blacks Cats recently parted company with controversial manager Paolo Di Canio with the struggling Premier League club currently rock bottom of the top flight, without a victory all season long.

However, after more talks on Monday, the north-east giants are now thought to be set to announce the former Brighton and Hove Albion boss as Di Canio’s successor within the next 48 hours, despite the club having initially targeted both Watford manager Gianfranco Zola and former Chelsea coach Roberto Di Matteo.
