Premier League champions Manchester United are said to be interested in signing promising young Sporting Lisbon midfield player William Carvalho, according to reports in the Daily Mirror.

The up-and-coming Portugal Under-21 international has been with the Lisbon giants for the past two years now, although going into this current campaign Carvalho had actually only featured in four league matches for Sporting, during which time the player had failed to score a single goal for his club.

And, the 21-year-old has also spent time out on loan of late, firstly at Fatima in 2011, when he scored three times in his 13 league outings, before he then spent a season-long loan with Belgium outfit Cercle Brugge in the 2012-13 campaign, during which time Carvalho managed to net three goals in his 48 games for the club.

Meanwhile, since the start of the new season back in his homeland, the defensive midfield player has made nine appearances in total in all competitions for Sporting, scoring one goal, with his form having reportedly caught the eye of the Red Devils, who have recently sent scouts out to the Portuguese capital to watch Carvalho in action first hand.

And with a £5 million buyout clause in his current Sporting contract that runs until June 2018, United see the Portuguese as being a possible investment for the future.
