Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of signing Athletic Bilbao forward Ibai Gomez when the winter transfer window reopens for business for the year in January have taken a blow after it emerged that the Liga outfit were set to offer the player a new contract come the turn of the year, according to reports in the Daily Express.

The 23-year-old Basque has been closely monitored of late by the north London club with a view to Spurs landing Gomez either in the new year, or when his contract expires at the San Mames next summer.

However, those chances of snapping the Spaniard up on a free transfer now appear to be over after Bilbao president Josu Urrutia confirmed that the Basques were preparing a new deal for their attacker as soon as the window opens again in January, especially to ward off interest in Gomez from the White Hart Lane outfit.

Gomez has been with Bilbao now for the past three years after originally arriving at the Liga side from Sestao in June 2010 on an initial two-year deal, albeit with an option for a third year.

And in the intervening two-year period, Gomez has managed to find the back of the net on seven occasions in total in his 77 matches in all competitions for the club going into this season.
