Check in to Swansea City vs Sunderland

Sunderland could be about to name Gus Poyet as their new manager in the next 24 hours, according to an exclusive report from Sky Sports News.

The Uruguayan has been the favourite for the position since the sacking of Paolo Di Canio last month, and has been linked with Premier League jobs before since his fine work with Brighton & Hove Albion in the Championship.

Kevin Ball has been working as caretaker manager for Sunderland since Di Canio’s dismissal, and had also emerged as a contender to take the position permanently, though he now seems likely to step aside as owner Ellis Short has opted to bring in a new face.

Some fans may be concerned about Poyet’s appointment following the controversial Di Canio, as Poyet himself left former club Brighton under something of a cloud, and may not be the calming presence needed at the club during this difficult time.

The Black Cats sit bottom of the Premier League and face a real fight to stay up this season after narrowly avoiding relegation last year.

The likes of Roberto Di Matteo, Tony Pulis and Gianfranco Zola had also been linked with the job in recent weeks.
