Manchester United are lining up a £30m move for Montpellier playmaker Remy Cabella this January as they seek a major signing in midfield, CaughtOffside can reveal.

The 23-year-old is rated as one of the best prospects in Ligue 1 at the moment, and his fine form over the last few years has also seen him emerge as a target for the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham in the past.

After providing 7 goals and 8 assists to his side’s cause last term, Cabella has started this season in sparkling form yet again, with 5 goals and 2 assists in his opening 7 matches to put him onto David Moyes’ radar.

The United boss had been linked with a whole host of midfield playmakers similar to Cabella for much of the summer transfer window, with Paul Scholes’ retirement at the end of last season prompting the Scot to seek a new long-term signing to add some creativity to his team’s midfield.

However, Moyes failed in attempts to sign the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Thiago Alcantara and Ander Herrera, bringing in just Marouane Fellaini from his old club Everton on transfer deadline day.

The Belgian international was one of the best midfielders in the Premier League last season but is not a creative player in the mould that Moyes is looking for, and United will look to rectify their disappointing summer transfer work when the window re-opens in January.

Even more players have since been added to Moyes’ list, with players such as Ross Barkley, Julian Draxler and Javier Pastore also possible targets for the Premier League champions, though Cabella’s performances of late look to have pushed him to the front of the queue to add some quality to this struggling United side.

Montpellier have previously said that Cabella would cost close to £50m, though United are confident of getting the Ligue 1 side to lower their demands to a more reasonable £30m this January, and although this is still a large amount of money, United expect to bring in some funds with the sale of Shinji Kagawa.

Although many fans feel the Japanese star could be United’s answer in that position, Moyes has been reluctant to give him a chance this season, and a move back to former club Borussia Dortmund looks increasingly likely this season.

Montpellier will no doubt be reluctant to lose one of their most influential players, but Cabella is likely to be tempted by the chance to prove himself at a bigger club, and could flourish at Old Trafford.

The French international’s ability to play wide has also appealed to Moyes, who may look to play him there on occasion if he fails to bring in a natural winger to replace the likes of Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia, both of whom have been under-performing this season and last.
