Everton have been handed a huge boost in their pursuit of Porto midfielder Fernando after the player’s agent denied that there had been any contact made by Inter Milan, talkSPORT reports.

Roberto Martinez failed with a transfer deadline day £15m bid for the Brazilian after he decided not to go ahead with a move to Goodison Park, but the manager has remained interested and is planning on another attempt to land his signature again during the January transfer window.

The 26-year-old will be out of contract with the Portuguese giants next summer and will be free to enter negotiations with other clubs in the new year.

However, his representative Antonio Araujo played down suggestions that Inter are leading the chase to secure the anchorman’s signature, by suggesting that is just the overactive imaginations of journalists that have concocted the rumour.

He told FcInterNews.it: “With Inter I can say that there is nothing. It is just the speculation of the newspapers.”

Inter had reportedly been keen on bringing him to the San Siro as a replacement for the ageing Argentine midfielder Esteban Cambiasso, and Serie A rivals Juventus were also credited with an interest, though so far there has been silence from their camp over the matter.
