Spanish giants Real Madrid are planning a surprise January swoop for Tottenham midfielder Paulinho according to TuttoMercato.

The 25 year old Brazilian international was the first of a lengthy list of new arrivals at the White Hart Lane and has settled in well at the North London club and interest from the Bernabeu is sure to concern boss Andre Villas-Boas.

Tottenham paid £17m to bring in the former Internacional man and Carlo Ancelotti may feel that the box to box performer could improve on the options he has in that regard in his Real Madrid squad.

Real Madrid wore Tottenham down before finally landing winger Gareth Bale for a world record fee and as such chairman Daniel Levy may have a fight on his hands to keep hold of Paulinho if indeed the La Liga side come calling.

Paulinho has started nine matches in all competitions thus far this season, scoring three goals and providing one assist in the process.

The adaptable midfielder is strong in the tackle and is also very adept at pushing forward and contributing in attack.
