Manchester City right-back Micah Richards has emerged as surprise target for Serie A leaders Roma ahead of the January transfer window, according to talkSPORT.

The 25-year-old has been at City for his entire career so far, after breaking into the first-team as a highly promising youngster back in 2006, though he has recently fallen behind in the pecking order at the Etihad Stadium.

With manager Manuel Pellegrini seemingly preferring Pablo Zabaleta at right-back, Richards could be set for a January exit to put himself in with a chance of playing regular first-team football, and improve his outside chances of claiming an England call-up for next summer’s World Cup.

Newcastle have also been linked with Richards, though Roma may be a more attractive prospect for the powerful defender as Rudi Garcia’s side look in good shape to challenge for the Serie A title this season.

Richards, who can also play centre-back, would be a useful defensive addition to the side, as they had to deal with the loss of promising youngster Marquinhos in the summer, with the highly-rated Brazilian central defender making a big-money move to French giants PSG.

Roma also have money to spend following big-money sales of Pablo Osvaldo and Erik Lamela, both of whom moved to the Premier League.
