Tottenham are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Japanese midfield star Keisuke Honda from Russian giants CSKA Moscow this January, according to the Metro.

The 27-year-old has earned a reputation as an immensely technically gifted attacking player, and is something of a specialist from set pieces, which could now see him given the chance to prove himself on the biggest stage of the Premier League.

Honda is set on leaving CSKA this January, with the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and AC Milan also all linked with signing the Japan international, whose fame in the far-east would certainly be a big boost for the clubs’ shirt sales as much as his influential displays on the pitch.

Juventus and Monaco have also been linked with Honda, but Spurs look to have beaten off some big-name competition for this signing, as they did with several of their high-profile purchases made during the summer.

Manager Andre Villas-Boas still has money to spend after the lucrative £85m sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid in the previous transfer window, and is happy to continue to add to his squad when the window re-opens for business in the middle of the season.
