Arsenal have been encouraged to make a January move for Man United striker Wayne Rooney according to Goal.com.

Despite his recent return to form this source claims that Rooney still wants to leave Old Trafford, this comes after a summer of excessive speculation that the England man had demanded to leave Man United, a move that the Premier League title holders were seemingly unwilling to grant the 27 year old.

Come January Rooney will have just 18 months to run on his current contract and as such his market value will start to reduce dramatically from that point onwards.

Both Chelsea and Arsenal were thought to have made offers for Rooney in the summer and now Arsene Wenger is said to be ready to make a fresh move when the transer window re-opens.

Wenger wants to bring in fresh striking options as he currently relies heavily on Olivier Giroud and despite the North London club forking out a club record £42.5m to sign German international Mesut Ozil the Arsenal boss will still have £80m to invest in the next two transfer windows.

Arsenal’s excellent start to the season could perhaps aid their chances of snapping up Rooney, who has scored five goals and provided four assists in eight appearances in all competitions thus far this term.
