Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen is reportedly ready to quit Arsenal in January after failing to force his way back into the Gunners starting eleven.

The Daily Star claim that the Belgian international is fearful of a lack of first team football affecting his standing in the national team set-up.

On the subject they quote Vermaelen as stating;

“I’ll have to think about that when it’s necessary. January is still a few months ahead.

“Of course, never playing will not be the ideal situation for me to go to the World Cup, that’s for sure.

“People ask me if I panic because I’m not playing a lot but I’m not.

“I have spoken to the manager but it will remain private between us.

“Things can happen in a split second and change my situation. That can happen tomorrow or next weekend.

“In that case, we will speak differently in January. I have to be ready for that.”

The former Ajax man was a regular in the Arsenal defence for most of his tenure at the Emirates Stadium but loss of form and the consistent displays from Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny have left the 27 year old out in the cold and the longer that situation continues the more likely the former club captain will push to leave the North London club.

Vermaelen has started just eight Premier League fixtures in 2013.
