Italian giants Lazio will rival Premier League trio Newcastle, Swansea and Cardiff for the signature of Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis, according to the Daily Express.

Magpies boss Alan Pardew had thought he had signed the 27-year-old during the summer transfer window after a fee had been agreed with Lyon, but negotiations broke down after the player flew into St James’ Park to discuss personal terms.

However, Pardew may get a second bite at the cherry as Gomis sees his contract at the Stade Gerland expire in the summer, with Cardiff and Swansea also on alert of the 28-year-old’s future availability.

But the Premier League trio will now face stiff competition for his services from Serie A as Lazio have reportedly now entered the race to take him away from France.

Lazio are also in the market for a new striker as veteran hitman Miroslav Klose is also reaching the end of his current deal and is widely expected to move on this summer with moves to Major League Soccer and a return home to the Bundesliga mentioned.

Lyon have struggled for form so far this season, but Gomis is a renowned goalscorer, who has bagged at least ten goals in each of the last seven seasons.
