Napoli could pounce for Thomas Vermaelen this Janury after the Belgian centre-back admitted he could look to leave Arsenal to play more first-team football, according to Inside Futbol.

The Belgian international has been with the Gunners since 2009 when he joined from Dutch side Ajax, and although he quickly became a key player for the club his form has dipped significantly in the last year or so.

Arsene Wenger had made Vermaelen club captain last season following the departure of Robin van Persie to Manchester United, but his future came into doubt over the summer after he was dropped by the manager towards the end of the campaign.

Napoli were said to be one of the clubs interested in moving for him, though he ended up remaining at the Emirates Stadium, and it seems likely that the Serie A giants will come back in for him as he his situation in north London does not look to have improved.

A centre-back is seemingly high on Rafael Benitez’s agenda, with the former Liverpool manager also looking at raiding his old club for Martin Skrtel as well as Barcelona for versatile Argentine Javier Mascherano, who can operate in defence or midfield.
