Borussia Dortmund have given little away in their rumoured pursuit of Arsenal target and highly-rated FC Basel defender Fabian Schar, according to Sky Sports.

The Swiss youngster has emerged as a target for Juventus as well as his reputation continues to grow, and Dortmund are reportedly keen on signing him with the anticipation that their key centre-back Mats Hummels may be set to leave the club at the end of the season.

Schar has shown the potential to be an ideal replacement for the German international, and Dortmund could look to bring in the 21-year-old as soon as this January, though their general manager Michael Zorc has refused to give any indication as to whether a deal could be on the cards.

“The speculation about Fabian Schar being on his way to our club is one of many transfer rumours doing the rounds,” he said.

“Most of the time, these transfer rumours turn out not to be true.”

With other sides keen to land Schar, Arsenal may try and step up their interest for the Switzerland international this January as they desperately seek to add some depth to their back four, having missed out on the likes of Ashley Williams and Adil Rami during the summer, and with Thomas Vermaelen possibly on his way out of the club.

Despite Arsenal’s strong start to the season, they have looked short of options in central defence at times, with right-back Bacary Sagna filling in there on occasion.
