Newcastle United Manager Alan Pardew is hoping to do a deal to sign PSV Eindhoven striker Ola Toivonen in January after the Swedish star turned down the Dutch club’s latest contract offer, the Mirror reports.

Toivonen is out of contract at the Philips Stadion next summer and PSV are thought to be willing to listen to offers in the region of £2.5m for him as they hope to sell him for a small fee now and not risk losing him for nothing next summer.

The 27-year-old operates either as an attacking midfielder or a striker, and with Newcastle desperate to add more fire power to their front line a deal to bring him to St James’ Park would appeal to the Magpies boss.

Norwich had been linked with a move for him during the summer transfer window but the player wasn’t keen on a move to Carrow Road, forcing the Canaries to turn their attentions toward Celtic striker Gary Hooper instead.

Fulham and Italian giants Fiorentina were also said to be interested in his services, but have both since moved on to other targets leaving the path seemingly clear for Newcastle to strike a deal.
