Liverpool could line up a surprise January bid to rivals Manchester City for their young striker John Guidetti, according to the Metro.

The Swedish youngster has only made one appearance for the Etihad club since joining in 2008, and although he has impressed in loan spells away from City, injuries have disrupted his progress as a first-team regular.

The 21-year-old notably scored 20 goals and provided 8 assists during the 2011/12 season whilst on loan at Dutch side Feyenoord, though he has been unfortunate to face some top-class competition for places at the club as they have continued to spend big on more established names.

With the likes of Sergio Aguero, Alvaro Negredo, Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic all currently vying for the two striker spots in the team, Guidetti faces an almost impossible task of breaking into Manuel Pellegrini’s starting lineup, and seems likely to be allowed to leave this January.

Liverpool rate him highly though, and could pounce for the youngster if he becomes available, with Reds manager Brendan Rodgers keen to continue to build and develop a young side.

The Anfield side currently lack options upfront, with Iago Aspas disappointing since signing from Celta Vigo in the summer, and Luis Suarez likely to leave the club for Real Madrid in January.
