Reds could win the race for Barcelona defender.

Liverpool could be in pole position to beat a host of clubs to the signing of Barcelona right-back Martin Montoya, according to the Daily Star.

The young defender has been attracting a great deal of attention in the last few months as he is in the final year of his contract at Barcelona, and it is understood that he would favour a move to Liverpool over the likes of Arsenal and Inter Milan.

Montoya has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter at Barcelona and is considering his future at the club, with the likes of Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen and Napoli also all interested in snapping him up if he becomes available.

However, Liverpool are now expected to step up their efforts to sign him this January, and they could sign him on the cheap as the Catalan giants won’t want to lose him on a free next summer.

The 22-year-old is highly rated in Spain and could fit in well into Brendan Rodgers’ policy of recruiting and developing talented young players at Anfield.

Although Liverpool currently have Glen Johnson as first choice in that position, Montoya could be a good long-term replacement for the 29-year-old.
