Real Madrid are hoping to pounce for the free transfer of Juventus and Italy star Andrea Pirlo next summer, according to Forza Italian Football.

The 34-year-old is still widely regarded as one of the best midfield playmakers in the game, and has been a top performer for club and country in a glittering career.

However, the veteran maestro is currently stalling on a new contract with the Serie A champions, and this has alerted a number of top teams to his potential availability on the cheap this January, or when his current deal expires at the end of the season.

A number of Premier League clubs are believed to be keen on Pirlo, though it could be his former manager at AC Milan, Carlo Ancelotti, whom he is reunited with at the Bernabeu.

With Real Madrid likely to be letting the likes of Xabi Alonso and Sami Khedira leave the club, Los Blancos have been linked with a number of high-profile midfielders, such as Chelsea’s Ramires and another Juventus player Arturo Vidal.

Pirlo, however, could represent a good cheap option for the Spanish giants as they hope to put most of their transfer budget into the big-money signing of Liverpool striker Luis Suarez this January.
