Chelsea are readying a move to sign Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa as Jose Mourinho sets about improving his Blues attack according to the Daily Star.

The 25 year old Brazilian, who could opt to represent Spain at national team level, has scored an astonishing 12 goals in 10 matches in all competitions this term and in turn helping his Vicente Calderon side become genuine La Liga title candidates.

Costa has ably filled the void left by Radamel Falcao, who left for AS Monaco in the summer, and alongside experienced Spanish international David Villa the powerful forward has scared the life out of defences.

Last term Costa managed a very laudable 20 goals but has taken a big step up in consistency terms and is now being targeted by a number of Europe’s ‘Elite’.

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone would be loathed to lose Costa but the club have a history of selling off their most bankable assets in order to balance the books. The likes of the aforementioned Falcao, Sergio Aguero, Diego Forlan and David de Gea have all left in recent seasons.

Chelsea’s current quartet of striking options, Samuel Eto’o, Fernando Torres, Andre Schurrle and Demba Ba have managed just one Premier League goal between them this term, this in marked contrast to loaned out Belgian Romelu Lukaku who has netted four goals in four matches for Everton.
