Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that midfielder Jack Wilshire has been struggling with an ankle injury and that he fears for his young charge after the problems he’s had with injury over the past 18 months, the Daily Mirror reports.

The midfielder played during his side’s victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday but looked doubtful in the build up having limped off during their Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund during the week.

Wilshire himself has consistently denied that he is battling with any sort of fitness issues as he claims to be fully over the problems that kept him out of the side for the past year and a half, but Wenger confirmed that all is not right with the young England international.

“It’s difficult for us to find the right rhythm for him. Before I always played him and people say I overplayed him.

“Now I try to be a bit more cautious. It’s difficult because his ankle is up and down a little bit. He’s getting better but it’s still inflamed sometimes and responds sometimes to games. But after that it goes down again and is normal.

“He will go through this period of stabilisation. It’s going upwards but sometimes you wonder: ‘Do I take a gamble or not?’

“But he’s 22. He needs competition. I do what the medical people recommend with him because I am not a specialist. They are quite positive about him.”
